J.K. Rowling Gives Donation to Fund MS Research

HollywoodNews.com: Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling has donated £10m (approximately $15 million) towards the fight for a cure for Multiple Sclerosis. The funds, which were donated to the University of Edinburgh, are aimed to attract researchers who will help to aggressively find a cure for multiple sclerosis. The Anne Rowling Regenerative Neurology Clinic will also strive to find causes and cures for other neurological conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. The clinic is named in honour of Rowling’s mother, who died of the disease in 1990 at the relatively young age of 45, the same age the author is now. Of the donation, Rowling states: “I have supported research into the cause and treatment of multiple sclerosis for many years now, but when I first saw the proposal for this clinic I knew that I had found a project more exciting, more innovative, and, I believe, more likely to succeed in unravelling the mysteries of MS than any other I had read about or been asked to fund. “I am incredibly impressed by the calibre of clinicians and researchers that Edinburgh has already managed to attract to make this project a reality, and I truly believe that it is set to become a world centre for excellence in the field of regenerative neurology.” The Anne Rowling Regenerative Neurology Clinic is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year. Rowling was a patron of the MS Society Scotland until stepping down last year due to internal conflicts within the organization. She has continued to vocal about her hope to find a cure for the disease, and it’s great that she is using her celebrity and wealth to help a great cause. Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system – or more specifically – the brain and spinal cord.
